Bullnose Sandstone Treads: Sizes and Fixing
The tread is 1200x350x30mm with a bullnose front edge, and the riser is 1220x170x20mm. A 350mm going is comfortable for outdoor steps, deeper than the 300mm most indoor stairs use, which is what you want on a garden flight where people walk down carrying things.
Both pieces are sold by the piece rather than by square metre, so count the flight and order that many. Treads go onto a concrete or blockwork substructure with a full bed of adhesive, not spot-fixed, because a hollow under stone tread cracks the first time someone lands heavily on it. The riser sits behind the tread nosing so the bullnose overhangs by around 20 to 30mm and throws water clear of the face below.
Why Sandstone for Steps
The honed and sandblasted finish gives grip in wet weather without being harsh, which is the compromise you want on stairs. Steps are the place where slip resistance stops being a specification detail and starts being a real risk. Sandstone also stays cool in summer sun, so poolside steps do not burn bare feet the way dark granite treads can.
The colour is the same banded tan and rust as the rest of the Teakwood range. If your paving is already Teakwood, the steps will match; if you are pairing steps to something else, order a sample first, because sandstone banding varies more than a single-tone stone does.
