Rajah Multi slatestone, natural split, 10mm thick, in 300x200mm, 300x300mm and 400x200mm. Multi means exactly that: rust, gold, green, grey and charcoal all run through the same batch, and no two pieces match.
10mm Is a Tile, Not a Paver
Worth stating clearly because the format catches people out. At 10mm this is a bonded tile and wall cladding product. It goes on interior floors, feature walls, splashbacks and fireplace surrounds, or outdoors bonded to an existing concrete slab under cover.
It is not a paving stone. A 10mm slate laid on a garden path or a driveway will break. If you want the slate look underfoot outdoors, the 30mm Midnight Black slatestone is the format that handles it.
Living With a Multi-Colour Slate
Rajah Multi is a strong material and it needs a plain setting. On a feature wall behind a neutral room it does the work of a painting. Across a whole open-plan floor with patterned furnishings it becomes noisy. Most of the successful installations we see are single walls, fireplace surrounds, splashbacks and small entry floors.
Dry-lay a square metre before fixing and shuffle the pieces until the colours distribute evenly. Slate arrives sorted by size, not by colour, and if you fix straight out of the crate you will end up with a rust-heavy patch in one corner and a grey patch in another.
Sealing
Natural split slate has a riven surface with fine flakes that can lift on a new tile. A wipe-down and a penetrating sealer settles the surface, deepens the colours considerably, and makes the wall or floor much easier to clean. On a fireplace surround, seal it: soot comes off sealed slate and stains unsealed slate.
Coverage is 43.2sqm per crate in the smaller formats and 38.4sqm in the larger.
More options are on the wall cladding page and the indoor stone tiles section. Direct import, Keysborough dispatch, freight Australia wide. Samples are free, and on a multi-colour stone a sample is close to essential.
