A Tumbled Limestone Floor
This page is about the tile formats, meaning stone you bond to a slab or screed indoors and in covered areas. Tumbled limestone makes a very good floor: the antique face hides the small scratches every real floor collects, the grey hides dirt between mops, and the surface has a matte, aged character that a honed tile cannot fake. It suits farmhouse kitchens and modern extensions equally, which is unusual.
Picking a Format
At 15mm you have four sizes, and the choice changes the room. The 917x610mm reads generous and calm in open-plan areas; 610x305mm suits hallways and smaller rooms; French Pattern in 20mm gives a repeating four-size layout for big floors that would look rigid in a grid. Mixed-width laying with the 15mm sizes is also possible if your tiler is willing.
Laying and Care
Bond to a flat, cured slab or screed with a flexible cement-based adhesive. Seal before grouting, since limestone is porous and grout haze on an unsealed antique face is a misery to remove. After that, sweep grit and mop with pH-neutral cleaner. Limestone will scratch under dragged furniture, so use felt pads, and the tumbled finish will quietly absorb what wear does get through.
