A Grey Marble Indoors
Monaco is a mid grey marble with soft white veining running through it. It reads cooler and more contemporary than travertine or limestone, which is why it turns up in bathrooms and open living floors alongside dark joinery. The antique finish takes the polish off and lightly wears the edges, so the floor has depth without the mirror shine that dates a polished marble interior.
What Marble Asks of You
Worth being straight about this. Marble is calcium carbonate, which means acid etches it. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine and many bathroom cleaners will leave a dull mark on the surface, and a sealer slows that down but does not prevent it. In a kitchen that is a real consideration; in a bathroom or a formal living area it rarely comes up.
The antique finish helps, because a matte worn surface hides an etch mark far better than a polished one does. If the floor is going into a busy family kitchen, a granite or a limestone will give you fewer things to think about.
Laying
Seal before grouting, and use a non-acidic grout. Cut with a wet saw. Marble is softer than granite so it cuts cleanly, but it also chips at the edge if the blade is worn.
Other tones are on the marble range, including the grey Atlantic Grey and Tundra Grey. We import direct into Keysborough, Melbourne. Samples are free.
