Modernstone Retaining Wall Blocks

Modernstone is the larger of our two National Masonry retaining blocks. Fourteen grand units make a square metre of wall face, against 26.3 for Garden Wall Curved Face, so a Modernstone wall goes up in roughly half the handling. It suits straight runs and taller walls where the bigger unit reads better at scale.

The Three Parts

A finished Modernstone wall is three components and they are ordered separately because they are measured differently.

• Grand unit, the wall itself, 14 per square metre of face, 48 to a pallet, which builds 3.43 square metres.
• Splitface cap, the course that finishes the top of the wall, measured per lineal metre of wall length at 4.44 caps per metre, 120 to a pallet.
• Corner unit, sold each, with a finished return face so an external corner does not show a cut end. Count your corners and allow one per corner per course.

Measure the face area for the grand units, then the wall length separately for the caps. Those are two different numbers and running the whole order off the area is the usual way people end up short on capping.

Modernstone or Garden Wall Curved Face

Choose Modernstone for straight walls, taller walls and where you want the capped top and finished corners. Choose Garden Wall Curved Face for garden beds, low terraces and anything that has to follow a curve. Both come in the same three colours, so they can be used on the same site without a colour clash.

Before You Build

Get engineering advice before building a Modernstone wall of any real height. Height limits, footing design and drainage depend on the slope behind the wall, the soil, and what sits or drives near the top of it, and most councils require approval above a set height. Drainage aggregate and an ag line behind the wall are not optional at any height.
