Valas crazy paving, antique finish, in random pieces from about 200mm to 600mm across at 20mm thick. The stone is a pale blue-grey marble, cooler than the limestone crazy paves and softer in tone than bluestone.
The Colour
Valas is the quiet option in the crazy paving range. Light blue-grey with fine darker veining, and the antique finish takes any shine off it, so a laid area reads as a soft even field rather than a patchwork. If you have looked at crazy paving and found most of it too busy, this is the one to sample.
It works particularly well with grey render, black window frames and silver-toned decking, and it does not fight blue pool water the way a warm gold stone can.
At 20mm, Where It Goes
This is a 20mm stone, so it belongs on a concrete base with adhesive, not on a compacted base carrying vehicles. Patios, courtyards, garden paths, pool surrounds and alfresco areas all suit it. For a driveway you want the thicker, denser Porphyry crazy paving instead.
Crates cover 23sqm. Allow around 15 percent over your measured area, since random pieces generate more trimming waste than square pavers.
Grout and Laying
On a pale cool stone like Valas, a mid-grey grout usually looks better than a white one. White grout against pale blue-grey tends to make the joints jump out and the stone look dirty by comparison. Lay the biggest flags first and infill with the smaller pieces rather than working straight out of the crate.
Marble takes a sealer well and sealing before grouting is worth doing, since an unsealed pale marble picks up grout haze that is difficult to shift afterwards.
