Raven Black Cobblestones are a bold, durable paving choice designed for long-term performance in outdoor settings. Available in 100x100mm and 200x100mm sizes, with 20mm or 30mm thicknesses, they’re suited to everything from driveways and courtyards to pathways and patios.

The rich black tones and textured granite surface deliver a modern edge while still complementing traditional landscapes. Choose between loose or mesh-backed brick bond formats for flexible installation depending on your layout needs. These cobbles are naturally strong and slip-resistant, making them ideal for high-traffic areas that need a sturdy, low-maintenance surface.

A Black Cobblestone Driveway

This is what most people are here for, so it is worth covering properly. Raven Black is the cobble we would put on a driveway ahead of anything else in the range. It comes in two formats, 100x100mm and 200x100mm, in 20mm and 30mm, and it comes on brick bond mats as well as loose, which matters more than people expect once the job starts.

For a driveway, use the 30mm on a reinforced concrete slab, bonded with adhesive. Cobbles laid straight onto road base will move under a car eventually, whatever the stone. The slab carries the load and the cobble is the wearing surface. Built that way a black granite driveway is effectively permanent.

Brick Bond Mats Versus Loose Setts

Brick bond arrives pre-mounted on mesh, so you lay a square metre at a time with the joints already even. On a large driveway that saves days of work and produces a straighter result than most people manage by hand. Loose setts are cheaper per square metre and let you curve the pattern or fan it around a turning circle, but the labour is real.

Coverage is 12sqm per crate in 100x100x30mm and 18sqm in 200x100x30mm. Add roughly 10 percent for cuts.

Why Black Holds Up on a Drive

Practical rather than aesthetic: black granite hides tyre rubber, oil spotting and the grey film that a driveway picks up over a winter. On pale stone all of that shows and needs washing; on Raven Black it disappears. The tumbled finish also keeps grip when wet.

The one caveat is heat. Black stone in summer sun gets hot, which is irrelevant on a driveway and matters a lot on a pool surround. Around a pool, use Raven Black as a border and something pale in the field.

For a rougher, more textured black cobble in a single small format, see Mountain Black, which has a natural split face rather than a tumbled one. The same Raven Black granite runs through pavers and tiles and treads and risers, so a driveway, its steps and the entry paving can be one stone.
