Bluestone treads and risers are designed for outdoor stairs, pool surrounds, and entryways. The treads measure 1210x350x30mm and come in either a bullnose or pencil edge finish, while risers are available in 1210x170x20mm for a uniform look.
Choose bullnose for a rounded, softer edge or pencil edge for a sharper, contemporary profile. These are often installed on garden stairs, pool ledges, and raised pathways.
The classic grey tone with subtle blue undertones blends well with most landscaping styles. These pieces offer a durable, slip-resistant surface suitable for high-traffic or wet areas.
Pair with matching pool coping, stone stair sets, or textured wall cladding to complete the look. You can also browse our bluestone paving range or view all pavers for more options.

Bluestone Steps in an Australian Garden
Bluestone is the default step stone across Melbourne and much of Victoria, and that is not only habit. The colour sits naturally against local brick and render, it weathers to a soft grey-blue rather than staining, and the natural split face holds grip through a wet winter without needing any treatment.
The stone we supply is dense basalt in the bluestone family. It handles frost, salt spray near the coast, and the freeze-thaw that catches out softer stone in the ranges.
Choosing the Edge Profile
Treads come as 1210x350x30mm in bullnose or pencil edge. Bullnose is the rounded nose: softer underfoot and on shins, better at throwing water clear, and the usual choice for garden and pool steps. Pencil edge is squared with the corner just taken off, giving a crisp shadow line that suits contemporary work.
Mixing profiles in one flight looks like a mistake even when it is deliberate, so pick one and order the whole flight in it.
Getting the Flight Right
Risers are 1210x170x20mm, and both pieces are sold individually. Count your steps and order to match, with a spare for a long flight.
Two things cause most problems with stone steps. The first is inconsistent riser height: the eye and the foot both expect every step in a flight to be the same, and stone is unforgiving once bedded. The second is spot-fixing. Treads must go on a full adhesive bed over concrete or blockwork; a void under a 30mm tread will crack it under load.
Set the nosing to overhang the riser below by 20 to 30mm so water drips clear rather than running back down the riser face and staining it.
Carrying Bluestone Through the Job
The same stone runs through bluestone pool copings, organic steppers and bluestone crazy paving, so steps, pool edge and garden path can all match. The wider range is on the bluestone page.
