Bullnose or Pencil Edge
The difference is the nosing profile, the front edge your eye and toe meet. Bullnose is a full rounded edge; it reads traditional, feels soft underfoot and forgives knocks, which suits garden steps and pool entries. Pencil edge takes only a fine easing off the corner, so the step reads as a crisp slab; that is the profile for contemporary builds with sharp lines. Structurally they are the same tread, so the choice is purely visual, but choose once for the whole flight. Mixed profiles on one stair are the kind of thing you see forever.
Treads, Risers, and Getting the Order Right
A tread is the horizontal piece; the riser is the vertical face between treads. Ordering both in Argento gives a fully clad stair. Count treads per step and risers per face, then allow for any cut pieces at walls. At 1200mm long, most residential stairs take one tread per step; wider entries lay two with the joint centred.
Fix treads on a full adhesive bed with no voids, since a hollow spot under a nosing is where steps crack. On external flights, keep the nosing slightly proud and consistent course to course; a 5mm wander you would never notice in paving is a trip hazard on stairs.
Marble on Stairs
The anti-slip face is mechanically textured into the stone, not coated, so the grip on wet steps is permanent. Marble care still applies: seal the flight, use pH-neutral cleaners, and it will hold its silver grey for years.
