Limestone Indoors
Most people searching for limestone tiles are thinking about floors inside the house, and limestone is genuinely good at that job. It has an even, quiet colour that big rooms need, it feels warmer underfoot than porcelain, and in the honed finishes it reads closer to a natural concrete than to a tile.
Our tile thicknesses for interior floors are 12mm and 15mm, in formats up to 610x610mm. Cresme honed is the softest and most neutral of them. Tuscan Beige and Navona carry more warmth. Indoors, seal limestone before it sees a kitchen, because it is a calcium stone and acid marks it.
The reason to run limestone rather than a look-alike tile is continuity. Take the same stone from the living room floor out to the terrace in a 30mm paver and the boundary between inside and outside stops reading as a boundary.
The Same Stone Outside
Outdoors limestone is one of the better all-round pavers in Australia. It stays cool in the pale tones, it has a matte surface with reliable wet grip, and it does not fade. Use the 30mm thickness on road base or on a slab. The 12mm and 15mm pieces belong indoors or on a properly prepared slab, not on ground.
Around pools it is a strong choice, and it is worth knowing that limestone handles salt systems better than it handles acid. Chlorine tablets sitting on the coping will etch it. So will lemon juice and cola off an outdoor table. None of that is a reason to avoid the stone, it is a reason to hose spills off rather than leave them.
Choosing Between the Limestones
The range splits by colour temperature more than by anything else.
Pale and neutral: Cresme, Indiana White. These are the ones for brightening a courtyard that does not get much sun.
Warm: Tuscan Beige, Navona, Crema Sienna (also spelled Crema Siena). The classic Mediterranean look, and the safest match against brick.
Cool grey: Tandur Grey, an even mid grey with almost no variation piece to piece.
Dark: Midnight Glow, our charcoal limestone. It is the one people arrive at looking for “charcoal limestone” and it comes in 600×400 at 15mm and 30mm. It does not glow in the dark, whatever the name suggests.
Antique, Tumbled and Honed
Finish changes the stone as much as colour does. Honed is flat and contemporary. Tumbled and antique finishes have softened edges and a slightly worn face, which suits older houses and hides wear better over time. Oglio and Navona come antiqued. Cresme and Tandur Grey come honed. If you are matching to existing paving, get the finish right before you worry about the shade, because a honed and an antiqued version of the same colour look like different stones on the ground.

Does limestone need sealing?
Indoors, yes, particularly in kitchens. Outdoors it is optional, though sealing makes spills easier to wash off and slows staining under trees.
Is limestone good around a saltwater pool?
It is. Salt does not attack limestone the way acid does. Keep chlorine tablets and acidic drinks off the coping and it will hold up for years.
What is charcoal limestone?
It is the dark grey end of the limestone family. Ours is Midnight Glow, which comes in 600x400mm at 15mm and 30mm with a tumbled antique finish.
Does limestone scratch?
It is softer than granite, so dragged furniture and grit under a chair leg will mark it. Felt pads on furniture legs deal with most of it, and the antiqued finishes carry small marks far better than honed ones.
