What French Pattern Is
French pattern is a set of four different paver sizes that interlock into a repeating module. Lay the set out, repeat it, and the joints never line up into a grid the way a single-size paving does. It is sometimes called Versailles pattern or Roman pattern, and it has been used on European terraces for centuries.
You buy it as a pattern set rather than as a size. Every crate contains the right ratio of the four pieces, so you are not working out proportions yourself. The crate coverage is on each product page.
Why People Choose It
Two reasons, and they are both practical rather than decorative.
On a large terrace, a single paver size repeated over eighty square metres starts to read as a floor. French pattern breaks that up, so a big area looks like landscape instead of like tiling. The effect gets stronger the bigger the area, which is why it is the standard choice around pools and on wide entertaining terraces.
The second reason is that irregular layouts hide slight variation between pieces. Natural stone is not uniform, and a pattern with no continuous joint lines is far more forgiving of it than a running bond is.
Setting Out and Cutting
Start the set-out from the most visible straight edge, usually the house wall or the pool coping, and work outwards. Dry-lay the first two or three modules before anything is bedded, because the pattern only works if the module repeats cleanly.
Waste is higher than with a single-size paving. Cuts at the perimeter cannot be reused elsewhere in the way a standard rectangle can, so allow around ten per cent on top of your measured area, and more on a curved or irregularly shaped terrace. It is cheaper to have half a crate spare than to order a top-up from a later batch.
A tile grid is not the right guide for a French pattern floor. Set out from the module, not from a chalk grid.
Which Stones Come in French Pattern
Travertine is the classic and the most requested. Premium Classic Travertine offers French pattern in both a 12mm tile thickness and a 30mm paver thickness, so the same look can go on a slab or on ground.
In limestone the antiqued stones suit it best, Navona and Indiana White in particular, where the softened edges reinforce the aged look the pattern already has.
Marble gives the most formal version of it, and the anti-slip finishes on Atlantic Grey and Argento make it usable around water.
Whichever stone you take, matching copings and treads are available in the same colour, so the pattern can be framed by a straight edge of the same stone.
