How to Work Out What You Need
Concrete paving is priced and ordered per square metre, so measure the area rather than
counting pavers. Multiply length by width, then add around 5 per cent for cuts on a square or
rectangular job and closer to 10 per cent if the area curves or runs at an angle. Each product
page lists the units per square metre and the coverage per pallet, so you can round to whole
pallets where it saves money on freight.
Concrete or Natural Stone
Concrete gives you one colour and one unit size through the batch. That makes a large area
quick to set out, simple to quote and cheaper per square metre than quarried stone. What it will
not do is reproduce the variation that runs through natural stone, which is the reason people pay
more for it. Neither is the right answer for every job. If the area is large and the budget is
fixed, concrete usually wins. If the paving is the feature, look at the
natural stone range as well.
Getting the Base Right
Most paving failures are base failures. Concrete pavers are dense and hard wearing, but they
still sit on whatever you put underneath them, and a shallow bed over reactive clay will move with
the seasons. Excavate deeper than feels necessary, compact in layers, and give the surface enough
fall to shed water rather than hold it.
Pedestrian or Vehicle
Esplanade, Patio Pave and Patio Premium are pedestrian pavers, made for patios, courtyards and
paths. They are not driveway pavers. If the surface has to carry a car, either use
Grasspavers, which are 90mm deep
and designed for it, or look at the
driveway pavers range.
