Charcoal or True Black
Charcoal pavers are the practical dark choice. They give the contemporary contrast people want from dark paving, but a shade up from black, they show dust and water marks less and run noticeably cooler underfoot in full sun. If you want genuinely black stone, the black range covers G684 granite and slatestone; for most open-sun areas charcoal is the wiser buy.
Where Dark Pavers Work Best
Dark paving earns its keep as contrast: borders around pale stone, alfresco floors under pale walls, entries against light render. Full dark surfaces work too, with two notes from experience. First, heat: dark stone in January sun gets too hot for bare feet, so shade barefoot areas or keep dark stone to walked-through zones. Second, grout: charcoal grout on charcoal stone reads seamless, pale grout turns the same paving into a grid, so decide which look you want before the tiler starts.
The Stones Behind the Colour
Our darkest tones come from granite (the hardest wearing, driveway-safe), limestone like Midnight Glow (softer look, tighter budget) and bluestone (Melbourne’s classic). All are acid-resistant except the marbles, which makes dark granite the safest choice around outdoor dining.
