Genuinely Black Stone
Two stones anchor this range. Raven Black G684 granite is the classic black paving granite, deep grey-black with fine grain, driveway-hard and acid-proof. Midnight Black slatestone holds a matt near-black face and goes ink black wet, which is why it rules water features and pool walls. Both are the real thing; much of what is sold online as black paving arrives charcoal.
Living With Black Paving
Black stone is high contrast and high commitment. It is the sharpest possible backdrop for greenery and pale walls, and the most dramatic pool surround there is. It also runs hottest underfoot in summer and shows dust and dried water spots fastest, so it suits walked-through and looked-at areas better than barefoot lounging zones. Many projects get the best of both by using black as borders and features against a paler field, or by stepping one shade up to charcoal.
